Additional drinking water storage, improving operational flexibility and securing supply
The Wy Yung Water Storage Facility is East Gippsland Water's key treated water distribution hub for the Mitchell system which supplies many towns, including Bairnsdale and Lakes Entrance. There are two storages: No. 1 had operational issues and posed a risk to supply security, and No. 2 had been decommissioned when the No.1 storage was lined and covered in 2009. Our client needed additional local storage to improve operational flexibility and increased system water security, so they asked us to help them out.
We identified and assessed six options, with the preferred option being a new 36ML (megalitre) reinforced concrete storage with the ability to expand to 72 ML in the future, located in the previously decommissioned No. 2 storage. No. 1 was retained for operation and future refurbishment.
Our specialists from Australia and New Zealand managed the foundation assessment and detailed design, evaluated tenders, and provided superintending services.
The new storage provides our client with operational flexibility for maintenance, a significantly improved security of supply, and options for future system storage upgrades.
