Helping Brisbane keep up with the health demands of their growing population
A new tertiary public hospital had not been built in Queensland for more than 20 years. With a growing population, the Sunshine Coast University Hospital needed to be built, and our team was up to the job.
This greenfield hospital includes a gross floor area of approximately 160,000m² and incorporates the construction of an industry leading 738-bed public hospital. It places an emphasis on research and learning, and includes a 250-bed private hospital, a mental health facility, a science, academic, and research centre. Our involvement spanned about six years as we provided specialist technical advice on everything from master planning through to construction phase auditing. The subsurface utility work on this project included more than 30 kilometres of new inground piping to the precinct. It required coordination at the site boundaries with a State road authority, an energy supplier, a dedicated water authority, and four council departments. The development had an overall project value of approximately $1.8 billion, with the private hospital construction completed at the end of 2013, and the public hospital completed in April 2017.
In the end, we were able to ensure that the hospital was delivered in such a way that it could become the world-class health facility Brisbane needed and deserved.
