Collaborating with Indigenous communities and government agencies to reduce overcrowding in remote Northern Territory regions
Australia’s Northern Territory (NT) is vast and presents numerous challenges due to distance, variable road conditions, and harsh weather. To reduce overcrowding in the region’s Indigenous communities, more housing is needed. The Northern Territory Government Remote Community Housing Program aims to deliver adequate, improved housing where overcrowding has become a critical issue. Since 2018, our office in Darwin, NT, has delivered over 130 civil and site servicing plans for the development of housing lots in more than 20 remote communities.
Environmental factors play a big role in the engineering design for these projects. From Ngukurr in the north to Apatula in the south, our designs have had to be adaptable to suit the different weather extremes and site conditions of each region. To provide appropriate solutions, it is critical to draw upon the local knowledge of each site, which underpins the importance of collaboration with Indigenous communities and stakeholders.
Though many areas are sparsely populated, before construction can begin, each site is assessed to determine if any sacred sites or areas of cultural significance exist. This is accomplished by working closely with Traditional Owners. Along with housing, the Program also has a goal to deliver works through the participation of local Indigenous Territorians and businesses wherever possible. Developed in collaboration, we are honored to help to deliver enhanced quality of life and opportunities in the Northern Territory.
