Providing three suites including water birthing pools, day beds, family lounge, and associated facilities

When the Fiona Stanley Hospital (FSH) in Murdoch, Western Australia, converted a section of the main hospital into a family birthing center, our multidisciplinary teams worked to integrate the existing structure and services with the new layout and equipment.

The birthing suites required an application of screed on the floors to allow correct falls for the heavy pools. We used digital modeling to ensure that the additional loads did not exceed the concrete slab capacity, and our structural team advised on drainage core placement to avoid post-tensioned cables.

Our hydraulics team liaised with the UK pool supplier to ensure the product was compliant within Australian guidelines, and they also integrated the system with the existing infrastructure. With the changing function of existing spaces, our mechanical team completed ductwork redirection and identification of exhaust discharge locations to meet Australian Standard codes.

In addition to addressing power supply demands, our electrical team introduced ceiling mounted graphic skylights, decorative wall lights, and implemented the safe control of color-changing floor-level LED lights to enhance the ambiance.

All designs were closely coordinated with the architect to conceal functional infrastructure and reduce the clinical feel. Now completed, the new center gives women with low-risk pregnancies the opportunity to enjoy a holistic experience with the advantage of direct access to full medical facilities.
