Regenerating the historic heart of Perth’s central business district, one building at a time
Prior to 2012, many buildings in Perth’s Cathedral Square had sat unused for decades. In a bid to revitalize this block in the heart of the Central Business District (CBD), the City of Perth’s master plan envisioned the blending of refurbished heritage with new buildings, all surrounding refreshed public space. Stantec’s multidisciplinary consultants helped realise the plan, contributing to the development, design and construction of five separate buildings within the precinct.
The former State building was transformed into the 5* COMO Treasury Hotel, behind which sits the David Malcolm Justice Centre with 33-stories of offices. A mix of commercial and retail space is provided by the refurbished former State Administrative Tribunal building on Hay Street - complete with new façade, and a two-story basement car park was added to commercial space at 1960’s-built Church House. The award-winning Perth Library offers a distinctive architectural addition to the precinct, blending into the central landscaped plaza around which the buildings are arranged.
The transformed urban space offers a welcome resting spot for visitors to the CBD, with easy access to arts, entertainment, restaurants and bars in the revitalized Historic Heart of Perth.
