Stantec’s Don Erpenbeck speaks with POWER Magazine to share his perspective on hydropower and its potential in the United States
As one of the oldest renewable energy resources, hydropower is well-established as a reliable source of dispatchable energy. Yet, it is often overlooked and taken for granted. It’s commonly believed that hydropower’s potential is tapped out in the US. But many opportunities exist to add capacity at non-powered dams and on repowering projects. This includes pumped storage hydropower, which is a great source of energy storage and can help us balance the intermittency of renewable energy sources like wind and solar. It’s a critical component of the global energy transition and allows the world to decarbonize while providing reliable energy to communities in need.
Don Erpenbeck, vice president and global sector leader of Hydropower & Dams at Stantec, spoke with POWER Magazine to share his perspective on the US hydropower market and shed light on recent investments into the sustainable solution.
