In Environmental Business Journal, Dom Kempson describes the growing interest in nature-based solutions and how they address climate, biodiversity
The concept of nature-based solutions (NbS) and the value of ecosystem services is not new, but organizations are increasingly embracing the approach. NbS offers multiple benefits. NbS can increase biodiversity, help clean water, protect coastlines, add financial value, and reconnect communities with nature.
We can also use NbS to address flood risks and sea level rise due to climate change. One example is designing and building a coastal dune system to protect a community instead of a concrete seawall. Another example: a wetland system primarily designed for flood control or water quality can also enhance biodiversity and habitat. It can sequester carbon and mitigate heat islands in cities, too.
