Securing the structural integrity of buildings at one of Western Australia’s top tourist destinations
With around 750,000 visitors every year Rottnest Island is a popular destination for Western Australians. To address public safety, building durability and changes in compliance, the Western Australian government funded a seven-year program to assess, strengthen and reconstruct the roof and wall structures of 400+ public buildings on the island. Program priorities included investigation, reporting, documentation and structural conservation works to 65 of the oldest buildings in WA.
Putting aside the logistics of construction on an island location, the variety of shortcomings, building types, and issues arising required a practical, flexible, sensitive, and often innovative mindset. In a role which required resident structural engineering, site supervision and contract superintendence services, Stantec was a key stakeholder as well as valued advisor.
Concluding in 2019 on time and within budget, the program gave new life to many irreplaceable buildings and reinstated the structural safety of many more for the continued enjoyment by the WA community.
"Stantec were integral to the success of this project and consistently offered a reliable and personable service for the seven-year duration." - Rottnest Island Authority.
