Modernising the heart of Brisbane’s rail network
Brisbane’s Central Station has been the heart of Brisbane’s rail network since opening in 1889. In 2016, Queensland Rail engaged us to be part a significant facilities upgrade designed to modernise the station and deliver improved access, all while honouring the station’s heritage.
While PDT Architects designed the upgrades to the station and comply with the Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) (1992), we focussed on improving access to the platforms. This included the design and installation of new lifts and updating the stairs and escalators leading to platforms, and down to Ann Street and ANZAC Square, to help reduce congestion during peak customer periods. We also provided electrical, fire, hydraulics, mechanical, and vertical transportation services, and assisted in the investigation and reporting Central’s existing low-voltage distribution systems.
As the upgrades occurred while the station was fully operational. most of the installation work occurred at night, which required careful planning and significant stakeholder consultation with the Brisbane City Council to facilitate temporary road closures during delivery.
The recently completed escalator upgrade now provides travellers with improved access and modernised facilities.
