Overcoming a bottleneck on the road between Sydney and Nowra
Sitting in traffic can be frustrating. Drivers heading through the Illawarra, south of Sydney, know this only too well, especially on weekends and holidays. With increasing urban development across the Illawarra over the next 30 years, traffic congestion is expected to rise. Responding to this future need, Transport for New South Wales (TfNSW) completed a 9.5-kilometre bypass of the township of Albion Park Rail, and we were there.
Working in partnership with Arcadis, we assisted TfNSW across many phases of the bypass project by providing concept design services. This included road design, utilities, geotechnical, survey, and traffic, flood, and groundwater modelling. We also supported the project by providing environmental services and contaminated investigations. Our project management talents and a cohesive, positive working relationship with our client meant that we met tight delivery deadlines.
Towards the end of construction, we compared real-time traffic data with the concept model, which validated the projected outcomes used for the development of the bypass—driving home the project’s success. The bypass was delivered six months ahead of schedule and is fully operational.
