Resilient Adaptation & Mitigation
Helping clients address a defining issue of our time
Do you feel the urgency? We do. Do you also see the need to act? So do we. Each time storm surges batter our coastlines, wildfires engulf critical ecosystems, heat domes overwhelm our citizens, floods sweep away homes and businesses, and droughts decimate food and water supplies. Every day, the need to adapt and mitigate the factors contributing to climate change increases.
As design and consulting professionals, we see first-hand how extreme weather impacts the environment, infrastructure, and the communities where we work and play. We have learned that our greatest influence on improving climate outcomes stems from the creative, innovative climate solutions we provide to our clients and communities.
That is why adapting and mitigating the impacts of climate change is an integral part of our project work. Only by addressing climate change today can we create the resilient and sustainable communities of tomorrow.
Nature-based solutions
In the most sensitive catchment areas in England, Nutrient Management Plans (NMPs) have been put in place. Why? To cover protected Natura 2000 sites—a network of core breeding and resting grounds to safeguard rare and threatened species. What are the implications of these NMPs? How can we build enough homes for a growing population, while protecting our ever-threatened environment? Read MoreEngineered solutions
The full lifecycle of our infrastructure currently represents over half of the UK’s carbon footprint, and this proportion will increase as the energy sector decarbonises. The biggest opportunities to reduce embodied carbon are at the start of a project, where strategic decisions are first made. Read MoreTechnology solutions
At Stantec, innovation is driven by our people and based on the practical experience they encounter in their projects. When it comes to climate change, our Innovations Office is driving the development of solutions that help our clients mitigate their risks to Earth’s changing climate. Together with innovation, we can change support change, recognizing future climate impacts before they happen. Read MoreSocial-based solutions
As we adapt to the changing environment, we cannot underestimate the role social value plays. The Better Places Toolkit is a two-year joint research project with the University of Reading which aims to demonstrate the value of spatially mapping social value, supporting the planning and delivery of land development that offers better community, climate change and commercial outcomes.
