Remedying city overcrowding by relocating a campus
West Cambridge is a university site to the west of Cambridge city centre in England. Due to overcrowding, several of the University of Cambridge's departments had to be relocated from the centre of town to the West Cambridge location.
Our role at the West Cambridge site has grown from initial highway and infrastructure engineers to now include the delivery of site wide infrastructure to facilitate a range of projects. This includes academic, commercial and residential developments, including highways, drainage, utilities, and project management works. Development of the site is on a phased programme to introduce new faculty and research and development buildings for the engineering and science disciplines and related commercial research and development organisations onto the site. In order to improve the sustainability of the development much of the sites excavated material was re-used in the new construction.
The goal? The site will contain a commitment to creating a sustainable space and will have significant investment in the community infrastructure to help people lead sustainable lives. The development will secure the University’s long-term future while contributing to the City’s growth by providing homes for students, key workers, and the public in a vibrant area of the city.
