A new vision for a re-energised and resilient retail core
Glasgow’s traditional retail core, comprised of Buchanan Street, Sauchiehall Street, and Argyle Street, is collectively known as the Golden Z in recognition of its spatial pattern. As the architectural, economic, and cultural epicentre of the wider city region, the Golden Z is of critical importance to the future of the city centre. The way people shop, work, and connect is changing, so Glasgow City Council selected our team to prepare a new vision and plan for the Golden Z.
A process of collaborative engagement with local communities, landowners, businesses, and other stakeholders took place to identify key opportunities and constraints. We developed a variety of spatial and policy options in response to the impact of changing market and societal trends—with a focus on growing city centre living, repurposing vacant sites and buildings, encouraging a mix of uses, and contributing to the City’s net zero ambition.
Our plan sets out a renewed, regeneration direction for the Golden Z to support its successful evolution as the thriving heart of the city and to provide confidence to residents, businesses, investors, and developers.
