Partnering to improve water resilience through water reuse
The effects of climate change and population growth are putting increasing pressure on water resiliency in the South of England. Water companies in the region need to find additional sources of water. Wessex Water and South West Water have devised a strategic water resource scheme that will increase resiliency through integrated water reuse centred on the Bournemouth-Poole area.
As the lead design consultant for this scheme, our interdisciplinary teams are conducting a diverse range of services to support its delivery. This includes designing the water pipeline from Poole, the advanced treatment works, and the new wetland. Our work covers catchment modelling, programme and delivery support, and regulatory engagement to make ready for construction. We’re also engaging with interested parties and clients to establish that this project meets planning requirements and adds meaningful value to the region’s communities.
The result? This project will pump treated wastewater from Poole north to a new water recycling centre. The water will then receive advanced treatment before being discharged into the River Stour via a new constructed wetland. This wetland will moderate flow rates and provide an additional amenity for communities and wildlife. The project’s additional water flow into the River Stour will then be added to Longham Lakes—the raw water supply for the Alderney water treatment works—and partially replace water that is currently taken from the nearby environmentally sensitive River Avon.
Through this scheme, water companies will improve water resilience in the region by helping address the pressures on water supplies particularly during drought conditions.
