Dyson Institute Housing Pods - Engineering Services

The Dyson Institute of Engineering and Technology (Dyson Institute) is a leading university-style centre that develops engineering leaders of the future. Students live on site and work with Dyson’s global engineering team on live projects whilst studying for an engineering degree. To expand their housing stock, they set out to add modular housing pods to their campus. Dyson engaged us as part of the team to help.

Working collaboratively with WilkinsonEyre, our mechanical, electrical, and plumbing engineering design team delivered the detailed design for all the utilities to the pods. Manufactured off-site, the pods use cross-laminate timber (CLT) and allow for rapid on-site assembly. The pods also promote wellbeing through natural ventilation and their focus on light and visual outlook.

We also provided mechanical and electrical design services for the central hub—The Roundhouse. This configuration creates a welcoming environment in this unique structure by incorporating natural ventilation and indirect lighting. The Roundhouse is a freestanding, outward facing circular pavilion that provides a café, bar, lecture hall, study zones and communal spaces.

Today, the pods provide energy-efficient and striking modern homes for the Dyson Institute’s students.
