Double win for Stantec renewables schemes at UK Energy Awards

Stantec’s interdisciplinary teams were recognised alongside clients for innovation and collaboration due to their work on two outstanding renewables schemes

04/23/2026 LONDON, UK TSX, NYSE:STN

Stantec, a global leader in sustainable design, engineering, and environmental consulting, has picked up a duo of prestigious industry accolades for its work on two pioneering renewables projects at this year’s Energy Awards. The extensive refurbishment of Tummel Bridge Power Station in Scotland and the innovative Coed Ely Solar Farm in South Wales have won Energy Project of the Year—Private Sector and Renewable Energy Project of the Year, respectively.

Hosted in London on May 13, the Energy Awards showcased “the finest innovations, campaigns, and service developments across the energy sector,” with the aim to recognise the most impactful projects and innovations the industry has to offer.

Maximising the potential of hydropower
Stantec supported SSE Renewables with the complex modernisation of Tummel Bridge Power Station in the Scottish Highlands. This involved the replacement of the station’s two original ‘Camel Back’ twin-runner, horizontal Francis hydro turbines with modern and more efficient runner technology. The scheme extended the power station’s working life by at least 40 years and increased its efficiency and generation capacity from 34 megawatts (MW) to 40 MW. Tummel Bridge has now won multiple awards, including the Heritage and Restoration Award from the British Hydropower Association.

The judges commented: “This project stood out for its scale as well as the engineering challenge involved in re-utilising this asset, while respecting its historic significance, to extend its working life. It’s a great example of what’s possible and how older infrastructure can be upgraded using modern technology. An approach that also brings embodied carbon benefits.”

A positive example of partnership
Meanwhile, Coed Ely Solar Farm has transformed a reclaimed colliery in Rhondda Cynon Taf in Wales into a 6-MW renewable energy hub. The scheme powers a local hospital with low-carbon electricity while feeding energy back into the national grid.

The development, led by Rhondda Cynon Taf County Borough Council, is expected to save thousands of tonnes of carbon emissions throughout its life cycle. It was supported in its delivery by Stantec’s interdisciplinary teams, as well as Vital Energi, Rhomco, and The Urbanists. The judges said that the scheme “was impressive in terms of scale, holistic approach, and the social benefit it created and that it provided “a positive example of partnership working to achieve both decarbonisation and community benefits.”

“It is so important to share best practice when it comes to innovation in the renewables sector, and we’re delighted to be working with forward-thinking clients who give us the opportunity to demonstrate our capabilities,” said John Ord, Stantec’s regional business lead for Energy UK and Ireland. “I’d like to congratulate the wider project teams and the communities these projects serve for being recognised nationally as energy pioneers.”
