Stantec, a global leader in sustainable engineering, architecture, and environmental consulting and Yorkshire Water, have come out on top in the Infrastructure category at the Institute of Collaborative Working (ICW) Awards. The Yorkshire Water Strategic Planning Partnership was commended at the event for its efficiency and value-driven programme.
The event, hosted at the House of Lords celebrates organisations that address and overcome key business challenges while demonstrating the power of high performing collaborative teams. The Strategic Planning Partnership between Stantec and Yorkshire Water addressed numerous water industry challenges, such as climate change impacts, aging infrastructure, and water scarcity through a highly collaborative approach to operational management.
The two organisations worked together to improve efficiency and optimise Yorkshire Water’s AMP7 business plan, achieving significant cost and carbon savings. The collaboration allowed for the pooling of resources and expertise, fostering innovation and enabling the outperformance of business goals.
One of the most notable projects included within the strategic planning partnership was Clifton Wastewater Treatment Works and its integrated constructed wetland. The innovative nature-based solution, which has already won numerous awards and was showcased at COP28, resulted in a carbon reduction of 79 percent and an embodied carbon reduction of 50 percent. This, and many other strategically important projects, would not have been delivered without mutually committed leadership investing in co-creating and delivering a collaborative partnership that followed ISO 44001 principles.
In its first five years, the partnership has allowed for more than £194 million to be saved by Yorkshire Water on capital projects and halving of carbon emissions against Yorkshire Water’s AMP7 baseline. The water company has recently extended its Strategic Planning Partnership with Stantec for another five years, meaning it will run throughout AMP8 until 2030.
“Our continued success with Yorkshire Water is grounded in a mutual vision of more responsible operations and a desire to increase value for communities across the region,” said Ross Anderson, client services director, Stantec. “This award demonstrates our commitment to collaboration, innovation, and sustainability and gives incredibly positive external independent recognition for what the staff in our Leeds office and beyond have achieved in conjunction with Yorkshire Water, and our statement to collaborate further in the next phase of this important partnership.
Louis Quartly, head of engineering at Yorkshire Water added: “Our customers deserve world-class water services that deliver for them, their communities, and their environment. Our partnership has achieved its objectives, and I’m so proud of our teams who have worked effectively together to make this happen. We’re looking forward to continuing our important work throughout the next delivery period, where we will collaborate on a number of investment programmes across the Yorkshire region.”
