Stantec, a global leader in sustainable engineering, architecture, and environmental consulting, is supporting It Takes a City Community Land Trust in creating a new community of modular homes to help people who have experienced homelessness.
It Takes a City is a partnership which aims to end rough sleeping in Cambridge due to homelessness, developing collaborative approaches and sustainable solutions that work towards reconnecting people back into communities. Its scheme in Joy’s Corner in Cambridge has delivered four modular homes which will be used to house people while they rebuild their lives and transition back into society.
To help bring the scheme forward, Stantec provided a range of technical and planning services, leveraging its relationships with local water companies and in-house water planning expertise. To date, this has included the design and discharge of all drainage conditions following planning approval and supporting with the project’s Section 106 agreement to establish a direct connection from the homes into the public sewer system as well as to the potable water network. Stantec provided ongoing support throughout the construction phase of the project, particularly in relation to the water and wastewater connections.
Stantec also helped It Takes a City to connect with fellow professionals and introduced Breheny Civil Engineering, a local contractor that delivered the scheme post design as part of its social value commitments.
“Delivering new homes for those in need is always a rewarding challenge, and we’re proud to be playing a key role in bringing these innovative new transitional accommodation units to life in Cambridge”, said Haider Ali, principal engineer at Stantec.
“By working closely with partners and stakeholders, we are helping deliver sustainable and resilient infrastructure to support these homes for years to come. This project represents the forward-thinking, collaborative approach that Cambridge needs to meet its housing challenges for the most vulnerable while also keeping sustainability and community needs at the forefront of plans.”
Chris Jenkin, Chair for It Takes a City Community Land Trust added: “Stantec has gone above and beyond in supporting this project, and we really appreciate all they have done. They are great partners, and we look forward to working with them on future projects.”
