Othmane shares his experience as a principal high voltage cable engineer with the Energy group and opportunities for growth that Stantec offers
In the My Stantec Story series, our designers, engineers, marketers, project managers, and leaders come together to share how their career journeys at Stantec have shaped their lives and moved them closer to their goals.
I’m a chartered electrical engineer with experience in a range of disciplines within the electrical engineering field. As a principal high voltage cable engineer with the UK Energy group, my responsibilities consist of delivering design solutions for projects in the electricity transmission, distribution, and generation sectors.
I thoroughly enjoy the technical challenges offered in my current role and the variety of projects we’re working on
Until I joined Stantec, the company was unknown to me and, I think, to many of my colleagues in the electricity transmission and distribution market. However, this was never a deterrent to join, and the sense of wonder and discovery took over.
I joined Stantec’s UK Transmission and Distribution (T&D) team as the UK business was starting to really take off. Since then, I have witnessed fantastic and significant growth in terms of team size, capabilities, and project portfolios.
I thoroughly enjoy the technical challenges involved in delivering design solutions in the electrical energy market.
I have the opportunity to be part of a knowledgeable team that I learn from, while working on projects that directly help solve our energy transition dilemma and help meet our climate change targets.
What really interests me is getting to use my knowledge to make a positive change and add value to society.
Stantec has been very supportive of my development, and I was recently introduced to the Project Technical Leadership programme by my line manager. Having completed this programme I’m now an approved project technical lead practitioner. The programme helps equip people with the correct tools to form multidisciplinary teams and oversee overall project quality including health and safety, governance, and communication during the delivery phase of projects.
Since joining Stantec, I have been involved in the delivery of a variety of projects for different clients in the T&D, renewables, and water sectors, ranging from provision of complete design solutions (electrical, civil, and planning) for wind farm developers and electricity network owners, to writing electrical safety management procedures.
I have the opportunity to be part of a knowledgeable team that I can learn from while also working on projects that directly help solve our energy transition dilemma and indirectly help meet our climate change targets.
Given that we are a new entrant to the UK market, our priority is to deliver and maintain high quality work and results. Using all the tools and facts available and fresh perspectives, we try to find ways to overcome any barriers to progress.
As an engineer, I want to advance in my career while also maintaining a positive work-life balance. I take great satisfaction in solving engineering problems, and would love learning the trades of an additional discipline.
My time so far at Stantec has been satisfying, working with passionate colleagues from across the globe and in different business areas. This has enabled me to get exposure to other disciplines and continue to learn.
My colleagues within Stantec are very friendly and approachable, with a wealth of experience and knowledge to benefit from.
At Stantec, we put people first. For Othmane, that means growing his career in electrical engineering and being able to explore that in a variety of sectors. If you want to start your career at Stantec, visit our Careers page to find out more.
