A project to deliver a 7km-long path connecting Auckland’s eastern suburbs to the city centre and brings the community together

As part of Auckland’s Cycle Network and the Urban Cycleway programme, we provided a range of services to design an appealing route from Glen Innes to Auckland City's waterfront. The three sections of pathway offered a variety of challenges for our team.

Section 1, a 1.4km two-way shared pathway, required bridges for stream crossings, a mechanically stabilised earth embankment, and numerous retaining walls. The design meets the disability standard, controlled cyclist speed, and integrates rest areas on the steeper uphill grades.

Section 2, the longest at nearly 3km, includes connections to several schools better connecting them to their communities. This section provided challenges in terms of terrain, routing, ecology and even archaeological complexity. Our planning, consenting, and engineering teams resolved significant vertical alignment challenges, and a railway line crossing, to provide the community with a safe pathway that helps reduce vehicle traffic.

The final section, a 4.5 metre wide sweeping boardwalk alongside Ōrākei Basin, required materials rated for use in a marine environment. The complete route offers users a pleasing mix of terrain and viewpoints on the way to its ultimate connection with Auckland's waterfront shared pathway.
