Finding environmentally sound solutions to support this port expansion
Our ports are so much more than just ports—they’re transport hubs that play a vital role in serving our communities. Napier Port has experienced an influx of passenger ships, container handling, and log throughput over the years and are now having to increase capacity as the community grows.
Napier Port needed our support with environmental planning inputs for the new Six Wharf (Te Whiti) development and project supervision. Our team took great care in delivery and technical planning as this was the first time Pania Reef, a special conservation site with cultural significance, has been extensively researched—ensuring the reef wouldn’t be negatively impacted by the port development. After conducting extensive coastal process modelling, and fishery studies, we identified an offshore disposal site for the required dredging material to go to.
Now complete, this new wharf expansion is supporting this growing community—not only has the overall capacity been increased, but the surrounding shipping channels can now accommodate larger vessels.
