Lowering environmental impacts while increasing benefits to community
Nearly 40 permits and authorizations from federal, state, and local agencies were required for the Parkway Pipeline, a 16-inch (40.6-centimetre) diameter pipeline for refined petroleum products by Kinder Morgan Energy Partners. The pipeline would pass through four parishes in the state of Louisiana and across 28 miles (45 kilometres) of the environmentally sensitive Lake Pontchartrain. Next door in Mississippi, the pipeline was set to cross four counties.
To lower environmental impacts and increase benefits to communities, we helped refine the project route so that construction followed existing utility paths wherever possible. We managed all permitting for this work including 52 miles (83.7 kilometres) in a coastal management zone. We also provided construction management, engineering support services during production, and oversaw development of stormwater pollution prevention plan (SWPPP) and an environmental mitigation plan.
Our management of the environmental permitting process and applications for this project considered the people, places, and environment along the 140-mile (225-kilometre) pipeline route. With these permits and authorizations in place, Kinder Morgan Energy Partners could move forward with their pipeline, and with our design assistance, they were able to reduce community and environmental impacts.
