Providing essential environmental services following an oil spill in North Dakota
Following an incident at a drilling site, we were asked to assess the release and implement response actions. Over the Christmas holiday, two Stantec employees were the first to begin helping to visually assess the areas of impact and start coordination of initial response actions. Additional Stantec staff arrived over New Year’s to assess the magnitude and extent of impacts to flora, fauna, and residential properties.
We completed a GPS survey of the entire area and created an incident action plan. An adsorbent boom deployment plan was designed to keep oil from migrating to adjacent surface water resources, along with design and construction of secondary containment dams and a containment cell for oil covered snow. Overall, we collected oil covered snow and soil samples from approximately 1,000 acres (400 hectares) of agricultural land.
Representing the client’s interests in discussions between regulatory agency members and landowner stakeholders, we also ran the incident’s health and safety program. The client commented that they "could not have worked with a more dedicated and responsive group of people than those people at Stantec.”
