A unique spectator seating configuration allows for unobstructed views and a collegiate experience for swimmers and supporters
The New Caney Independent School District (ISD) Natatorium was designed as part of the Texan Drive Stadium Complex to replace a local high school pool with a facility that will serve up to three high school swimming and diving programs.
We were engaged as the architect of record, providing architectural design and interiors for the building. The district’s desire to maintain views to the stadium complex determined the pool orientation and seating configuration. For better sight lines, spectator viewing typically occurs along the sides of a pool. We placed seating for 400 above locker rooms, concessions, restrooms, and athletic head offices to allow for a compact plan and unobstructed views. The south end of the natatorium opens to a courtyard that serves as an entry to the complex and provides overflow for athletes during swim meets. We also introduced a large video board to the north end of the pool which contributes to the collegiate feel.
The 25-yard stretch with a bulkhead allows for multiple configurations and activities, allowing us to raise the bar for the swimmer and spectator experience. Successfully serving all district needs, the natatorium can accommodate competitive swimming, competitive diving, water polo, swim lessons, water aerobics, and other aquatic activities.
