Highway 610 and Noble Parkway Park & Ride Facility
Metro Transit’s newest park and ride facility is powered by the sun and the earth—renewable energy that helps transit riders support the agency’s “Go Greener” mission. And how do you harness that renewable energy? With our help in design, engineering, and architecture.
The facility generates its own heating, cooling, and electricity. This reduces energy demand and protects water resources. Taking advantage of the earth’s constant sub-surface temperature, the waiting area, elevator lobby, IT and mechanical rooms, and employee restroom are heated and cooled with geothermal energy.
The 40-KW solar array is designed to offset 25 percent of the facility’s power usage. And with geothermal, there’s no conventional fuel costs. Zoned, sensor-controlled LED lighting reduces lighting energy costs by half. Stormwater runoff is filtered and minimized by native plantings and bio-swales.
And the team provided opportunities for public education about the design. With a digital display, transit riders are able to view real-time results of Metro Transit’s efforts to conserve resources and control operating costs. The display shows a daily summary of power consumption and production. A tangible view of a sustainable success.
