From a fuel terminal to new commercial or industrial development, change is about more than excavation and backfill
After eight months of cleanup, 75,000 tons of petroleum impacted soil will be removed along with 9,500 feet of underground piping. Pulling together a core group of six staff members on rotation, we’ve worked with the City of Dearborn on permitting, provided oversight for excavation work, and had members of our Ann Arbor office complete the surveying work. Our goal: to help obtain a No Further Action letter from the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality.
Ten years of local experience on this project helped us navigate challenges. As excavation began, 4,500 additional feet of underground piping was discovered. We assessed and sampled the piping wrap, determining asbestos content. To manage the asbestos, site risk was reviewed and additional subcontractors brought in. Later, when a 100-year rain event occurred, we obtained a discharge permit from the City of Detroit to treat and discharge the rainwater appropriately. Once completed, the site restoration will not only address state regulations, but also provide new opportunity for future development.
