A clean energy project that saves millions of dollars and creates teaching opportunities for students

Can you save schools millions of dollars, help the environment and get kids excited about science and engineering?

This project for San Jose Unified School District creates 5.5 megawatts of solar energy and gives the district a reliable, low cost energy source that saves over $1 million per year. Our work had two phases. First, our electrical and mechanical engineers designed and installed solar Photovoltaic (PV) array at four high schools. Located on new parking lot shade structures, the systems protect cars from the sun’s heat while simultaneously using it to generate energy – all without using valuable parking space. At two sites we went further, using roof space to generate even more energy. Next, we added 3.5 megawatts of capacity at 10 other sites and significantly improved energy efficiency at the district’s swimming pools.

We’re committed to the power of education, and saw this project as an opportunity to let the students know more about the project and teach them about their own energy use. Educational displays at every site illustrate the system’s production and the school’s energy usage, which is used in science classes to study renewable energy, usage patterns and conservation.
