Sustainable and the largest of its kind in the United Kingdom

Located next to the fastest eroding coastline in the United Kingdom (UK), Yorkshire Water was faced with a challenge to relocate its existing wastewater facility in Hollym near Withernsea. By building a new treatment facility inland, Yorkshire Water were able to look at new, alternative options for treating the town’s wastewater. The implementation of a new Aero-Fac® Wastewater Treatment Works was the result of four years of collaboration and planning by Yorkshire Water, Stantec, Gurney Environmental, and Ward and Burke. A step away from traditional wastewater treatment, this option is the largest of its kind in the UK and uses renewable energy wind-power, providing an environmentally friendly, low carbon solution.

We worked with Yorkshire Water to develop a new variable flow 7,500-15,000 population equivalent (PE) works, which was selected to replace the existing higher carbon footprint activated sludge plant. The works has been designed to treat all flows and additionally, the ultraviolet system typically required by the Environment Agency was engineered out of the plant following extensive monitoring works we carried out at other Aero-Fac® plants in Scotland.

The works now operates with minimal environmental impact and a low carbon footprint. It provides dramatic energy savings, no sludge production or handling, plus energy-free disinfection, thereby making effluent suitable for irrigation water re-use and meeting bathing water quality standards.
