Generating renewable energy from waste and implementing a circular economy

The Taoyuan City Biomass Energy Center was built by Taoyuan City Government for solving waste disposal problem and achieving the goal of resources reclamation following the policies of Circular Economy and Recycling of Biomass Waste.

In order to ensure that the private investor could complete this project on time, we helped the government’s Department of Environmental Protection with the execution of contract performance management. This project will become the first biomass energy center in Taiwan, with the integration of a thermal treatment unit, anaerobic digestion unit and solidified landfill unit. After construction is completed, Taoyuan can achieve the goal of autonomous refuse disposal for effectively solve the waste disposal problem in Taoyuan City. In addition, these wastes can be recycled to generate renewable energy. It is estimated to provide around 200 million kWh of electricity (equal to the electricity consumption by around 60,000 households), and it will make Taoyuan a green and low carbon city. This is the first time that circular economy has been introduced in the urban development in Taiwan, setting the benchmark for sustainable development and circular economy.

The construction of this Biomass Energy Center was started in October 2018, and it is expected to be in operation by October 2021.
