Helping Fiji hit a renewable energy target by supporting the upgrade of hydropower infrastructure
Every cubic metre of water is precious in Fiji, so we helped to increase the storage capacity of the Wainisavulevu weir. High in the mountains of Viti Levu, the Wainisavulevu reservoir captures water and transfers it by cross catchment through a tunnel into the Monasavu reservoir. The water is then used in Fiji’s largest and highest hydro scheme, Wailoa.
Building on our long relationship with Energy Fiji, our team provided detailed design, construction supervision, and contract management for an 11-metre concrete dam raise and a new clay core rockfill embankment dam to increase renewable energy generation for the island nation. From conceptual designs and investigation through to construction, we were responsible for all engineering aspects of the project. Our team prepared the final designs, assisted our client in contract negotiations for dam construction, and monitored the build.
This forms part of a large program of works to upgrade Fiji’s power generation. By contributing towards the 100% renewable vision, we’re helping the country reduce its reliance on diesel fuel—an effort benefitting the environment and the economy.
