Shagannappi Natural Channel Reactivation

Reactivating Shaganappi Golf Course’s raw water intake following the June 2013 flood

Getting irrigation back up and running in time for golf season

Due to sediment deposition during the June 2013 flood event, the City of Calgary’s existing raw water intake for the Shaganappi Golf Course was hydraulically disconnected from the Bow River channel, causing a significant reduction in pumping capacity and irrigation services. The City reached out to us to quickly design a solution to provide the golf course with water for the upcoming season.

Located in a very geomorphically-dynamic location, the existing intake collected gravel and bed materials resulting normal formation and erosion within the river. Using historic aerial image analysis, hydraulic modeling, and geomorphic analysis of the site, we designed a channel to reconnect the river to the intake area.

Clear communication, the use of only native materials, and a detailed instream workplan helped gain regulatory approvals in time for the planned construction date, prior to the golf season. We also provided tendering support, environmental services (turbidity monitoring, fish salvage, bird sweeps, and ECO Plan Preparation), and engineering quality assurance services.

Careful attention to detail and an efficient plan kept things on schedule, under budget, and allowed the course to get game ready in time for the golf season.
