An integrated project execution plan to put 14 new solar farms across southern Ontario
When our client put forth an integrated project execution plan to put 14 new solar farms across southern Ontario, they approached us to help them get on the grid. We were subcontracted by PCL Constructors Canada under an engineering, procurement, and construction agreement (EPC) for Recurrent Energy. The goal? To design and build all projects, ensuring everything was constructed and operating on time.
Our team provided civil, hydrological, structural, and electrical engineering design, as well as procurement support, solar modelling, construction support, commissioning, and field testing. We also assisted with geotechnical and design management services.
The comprehensive project execution plan split the teams into four: two for civil design, one for DC, and one for AC design packages, with a project manager overseeing all aspects and staying in constant contact with PCLs representatives and team leaders. Senior staff provided quality assurance to all disciplines of each sub-project team.
Using common equipment selections and design strategies, we provided the preliminary AC designs for each site in advance, which allowed PCL to procure major equipment ahead of the traditional EPC design process. Ultimately, this helped to meet the aggressive schedule. When it was time to flip the switches, more than 100 megawatts of clean, sustainable energy was added to Ontario’s power grid.
