Building Canada's first bridge management system with modern analysis capabilities
Canada’s first bridge management system (BMS) with modern analysis capabilities was developed by Stantec for the Ontario Ministry of Transportation.
Until then, these systems mainly captured inventory and inspection data. Analyzing the massive volume of data from the Ministry’s 3,000 bridges was a daunting task. Now with advanced analysis tools built in, every part of the structure and substructure is inspected and modeled. Cost and timing of maintenance and repair are automatically generated.
This project set another record as the first BMS in Canada to meet international standards while adapting to Canadian codes and condition—cold winters, freeze-thaw cycles, hot summers, de-icing chemicals—factors contributing to deterioration.
Developing the BMS was a challenge. There was no prototype. We relied on a team of experts in infrastructure assessment software design, and inspection and maintenance of bridges to develop a ground-breaking bridge management system. We have since designed other BMSs in Canada and other countries, in three languages - English, French and Spanish. And yes, we have a BMS platform ready to customize to any client’s needs.
