Bringing old school character to a new community
Traditional small town feel, in the midst of the city. This is the vision we brought to life in McKenzie Towne. Calgary’s first neo-traditional community relies on traditional planning and design to revisit a simpler time. Bustling high street shops and classic homes are reminiscent of the small town experience. To achieve this character, new development standards had to be approved. An extensive charrette process was implemented to gather public input that was key to obtaining this approval.
New roadway specifications allow for rear lanes, creating pedestrian friendly streets. From tree lined boulevards, residents stroll to open spaces offering peaceful settings and recreational amenities. Open space guidelines define squares and parks, each with their own landscape design. Stormwater ponds and irrigation systems complement community amenities, incorporated seamlessly to create functional and aesthetic walkways and viewpoints, setting a new design standard.
Recognized by the Urban Land Institute as one of 26 exceptionally planned communities worldwide, we created a community non-conventional in its approach to residential and commercial land development in the Calgary marketplace.
