The first water treatment plant in Canada with LEED® Gold certification

The City of Kamloops’ treatment process consisted of screening and disinfection of water from the Thompson River. Very high turbidity levels of up to 500 NTU would occasionally occur in the spring, which can compromise the effectiveness of disinfection systems.

The City wanted to upgrade their treatment process to improve drinking water quality, so conventional treatment technologies were piloted, but funding was not available for a new plant. More cost effective membrane filtration was then tested and found to be a viable option, except a plant of this scale had never been constructed in North America. Also, membranes had not been previously used without expensive pretreatment on high turbidity water. The City then placed its trust in Stantec to design the 160 ML/d plant, and we delivered.

The list of plant innovations is extensive. We designed a low cost pretreatment strategy that includes short residence time flocculation to reduce organics prior to filtering. We incorporated enhanced coagulation for treatment of the highly turbid water, one of the first such processes in North America. Secondary membranes reduce the overall plant water loss to 1%, much less than the typical 10%.

The Kamloops Centre for Water Quality is the first water treatment plant in Canada to achieve LEED® Gold certification. It is also one of the only plants in Canada to incorporate education and research initiatives, with the City partnering with two local universities and a membrane supplier for graduate student research and training of operators.
