Developing a site layout that allows for maximum flexibility
Stantec helped the Region of Waterloo upgrade the Hespeler Wastewater Treatment Plant, while also piloting a promising new technology – Membrane Aerated Bioreactors. The MABR process is significantly more efficient than conventional activated sludge, with the potential to save tens of thousands of dollars per year in operating costs, while also using a smaller footprint.
We were tasked with undertaking a technical and financial analysis for retrofitting to MABR, as well as designing current upgrades to accommodate the technology in the future. Our team established design criteria and operating parameters to retrofit the existing aeration tanks for MABR, summarized the equipment required, and developed a memorandum outlining required changes to the existing treatment processes. We also completed a life-cycle cost and return on investment analysis.
The upgrades included adding a new headworks building, dewatering system, administration facilities, and secondary clarifier, as well as electrical upgrades. We incorporated flexibility into the upgrades to accommodate a future MABR upgrade with minimal costs. This included designing for the appropriate future screening requirements and developing a site layout that allows for maximum flexibility.
