Improving travel between Windsor and Detroit
The Windsor-Detroit gateway is one of the busiest border crossings in North America. With increased border crossing congestion, there was a need to provide additional means of travel between Windsor and Detroit—that’s what sparked the idea for the Gordie Howe International Bridge and Plaza.
To accommodate the new ring road and future Bridge Plaza, EnWin Utilities Ltd. needed to relocate their existing plant. With our experience working on many similar 27.6 kV utility relocation designs, EnWin requested our assistance for electrical and structural engineering related to relocation of existing overhead/underground main distribution feeders. The scope for this project includes preparation of preliminary drawings, design schematic for 27.6 kV circuits and pole spotting, development of final designs of various site topography, structural, and electrical engineering elements. We also included underground and overhead line detailed design, calculation of tensions and guying requirements, calculation of anchoring tensions, pulling tension calculations, cable ampacity and performed non-linear structural analysis using PLS-CADD for pole replacement.
When it’s done, the new bridge will provide the community with better system connectivity, improved border processing and capacity.
