Creating a control center to protect Edmonton's water

Extreme wet weather events overload combined sewers, causing significant negative impacts to river water quality. In response, the City of Edmonton developed a control program with a number of components, including enhanced primary treatment (EPT) at their Gold Bar Wastewater Treatment Plant.

After significant technological research, we defined the optimum process as chemically EPT with plate settlers. The uniquely staged process maximizes effectiveness by varying the level of treatment depending on plant inflow and associated loading conditions. Major system additions included 600 ML/day capacity EPT clarifiers, chemical systems to support the EPT process, 1,000 ML/day capacity upflow screens, new plant outfall and bypass conduits, EPT effluent transfer to UV disinfection, and odour control facilities. Stantec provided project management, conceptual planning, pilot testing, regulatory and permitting, preliminary and detailed design, construction engineering, controls/ programming services, and commissioning support.

The implementation of EPT has reduced the untreated CSO volume by 86%, resulting in direct river water quality improvements.
