Restoring mining sites for a sustainable future
More than 500 properties—or 1000 square kilometres of land—were included in the program. Operation of the former mine sites ranged from as recently as twenty years ago to as far back as the 1800s, with most mines inactive and abandoned. In the early 2000s, the corporation began organizing and assessing property holdings and associated liabilities in preparation for site closure and required a systemic plan for the cleanup and closure of each property.
We’ve provided geotechnical engineering, environmental remediation, and hydrogeology services for the cleanup and closure of the properties, ranging from forested lands, wetlands, urban lots to ocean shorelines, and former industrial sites. Our core activities included environmental site assessments, remediation design options analysis, conceptual and detailed remedial designs, construction oversight, specialty quality assurance testing and inspection during remedial construction, and environmental performance monitoring of remediated sites.
The performance monitoring and site maintenance phase of the program is underway, which will provide assurance that remedial objectives for the sites will be sustained into the future.
