Innovative methods decrease construction complexity and costs
Heavy rainfall in southern and central Alberta caused extensive flooding in June of 2013. Flood waters seriously damaged many stormwater outfall structures within Calgary and left others requiring moderate and minor repairs. The City of Calgary needed a multidisciplinary consultant to provide engineering design, environmental, regulatory, and construction services for 45 outfall sites. Ultimately, they relied on our expertise in outfall design and regulatory consulting, and our ability to deliver under immense coordination demands. We identified innovative methods to decrease construction complexity and costs.
While planning for the restricted activity periods (RAPs), we employed two strategies to improve project efficiency. To begin, we completed joint site assessments with the city to investigate each outfall site, confirming any outfall sites that did not warrant the cost of repair. Then we developed a simple assessment and monitoring plan for each site, focusing on the work that would be executed within the RAP.
As a result, we identified sites that could be completed within the RAP as they followed a set of innovative mitigation measures. This saved the program money and increased the available instream construction days.
