Helping develop infrastructure to accommodate Sunbury’s growing population
A rapidly growing city needs the right infrastructure to support expansion. For our client, this meant performing expert assessments of community impacts, and ensuring operational efficiency, constructability, and flexibility.
Western Water provides water and sewerage services to 153,000 people but with significant growth Sunbury’s population is expected to double before 2035. For this project, we provided a feasibility assessment of sewerage servicing strategies for the Sunbury growth area of 17,000 residential properties.
This involved assessing timing of development and the region’s topography to identify locations for pipes and sewage pumping stations along with opportunities to delay upfront costs by staging construction. We developed, assessed and refined options through workshops with Western Water’s Planning and Operations teams, evaluating them against operation and maintenance costs, greenhouse gas emissions, constructability and other key criteria.
Now complete, selection of the preferred option has allowed Western Water to direct developers in the growth area to allocate land for the required infrastructure and to plan the capital program to stage asset upgrades in line with growth.
