Helping port operations expand in an environmentally responsible manner
The Port Kembla Coal Terminal (PKCT) is an export coal terminal, servicing exports from southern and western coal fields in New South Wales for transport to international and domestic markets. We were engaged by PKCT as a project manager to satisfy all legislative approval requirements with state and local governments and authorities to allow for an expansion of operations—to meet an increase in demand that would require operations 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Our role was broad, covering all scoping, planning, budgeting, scheduling, and execution requirements, and the preparation of a stakeholder engagement strategy to manage relationships with media, authorities, the community, businesses, and special interest groups. We also led the preparation of the Environmental Assessment (EA) report designed to identify and propose mitigation of any environmental impacts arising from the proposed operational changes. This meant engaging several specialist consultants, including marine ecologists, specialists in air, soil, and water contamination, as well as remediation and assessments of traffic, noise, vibration, and visual impacts.
All relevant authorities accepted the EA report, and the expansion of the PKCT was approved. The PKCT continues to operate every day, 24 hours a day, in an environmentally sustainable manner, working in partnership with the local community to minimize its environmental impact.
