Bringing all environmental monitoring together under one program
Beautiful Shoalhaven in New South Wales is exactly that—a haven by the seaside with miles of sandy beaches bordered by forested mountains and coastal plains.
In 2018 the Shoalhaven City Council (Council) prepared and adopted a Coastal Zone Management Plan (CZMP). They recognized that to assist in rolling out this plan they would need to develop an Integrated Environmental Monitoring Program (IEMP), in order to help Council make risk-informed decisions
We were engaged by Council to create the IEMP. Initially, we wanted to create a snapshot of all current and future environmental monitoring activities, being undertaken by staff and through volunteer programs. We did this through a series of hosted consultation sessions. Gaps in activities were identified and the need for new or modified programs was assessed. The monitoring actions were consolidated into an integrated monitoring plan.
Once the plan was completed a communications strategy was developed to inform how, where and why monitoring takes place. From the consultation, an actions and communication plan was developed to communicate monitoring outcomes to stakeholders. We recommended they invest in an online IEMP solution which can upload citizen science program data, integrate disparate datasets, is easy to use, displays and shares monitoring information and is integrated directly into any corporate GIS.
