For over 25 years, Juan’s sensitivity to coastal and terrestrial environmental issues has informed his work and his leadership as a senior geomorphologist. In his role as Texas coastal lead, he supports the expansion of our services and expertise in coastal areas. Working with our unique teams of geomorphologists, ecologists, and engineers, he develops nature-based solutions as part of eco-geomorphological habitat restoration in Gulf of Mexico coastlines.
A critical issue facing coastlines is the lack of sediment that nourishes ecosystems and protects infrastructure. Watersheds and coastal systems are connected, and sediments trapped at the reservoirs induce bay and ocean shorelines to retreat and disappear. Eco-geomorphological management approaches have helped some areas affected by the lack of sediment supply. Juan leads multidisciplinary teams to develop new concepts and natural designs that restore the environment—helping to solve landscape challenges in coastal communities. How? With watershed planning, hazard mitigation, sediment management, and ecosystem restoration.
In his spare time, Juan enjoys staying connected to family. Passionate about photography and traveling to places near water, he feels fortunate that his family loves traveling with him, so he can share his two big passions.
