Stantec, a global leader in sustainable design and engineering, has been selected to provide architectural, interior design, MEP, and civil engineering services for Zoo Miami’s new animal hospital. The addition will expand the health team’s abilities to treat more than 2,500 animals representing close to 400 different species.
The 21,000-square-foot facility will replace the existing 5,600-square-foot hospital and feature radiology and CT scan rooms, treatment and surgery rooms, laboratory, pharmacy, and secure transportation docks.
With a focus on providing animals with the best possible care, the animal hospital will include unique and strategically placed animal care holding to allow for healing and recovery in low-stress environments. This includes an intensive care unit and various animal wards. The facility will also feature specialized aquatic pools for crocodilians, as well as padded induction stalls and smooth wall pens for hoof stock animals.
“This transformative expansion provides Zoo Miami with the ability to provide the highest standard of care to thousands of animals,” said Elvira Freire-Santamaria, principal and senior architect at Stantec. “Our design approach creates a flexible and transparent space that supports the zoo’s animal care, while also giving veterinary students the opportunity for education and industry experience.”
Incorporating education and clinical experience
In partnership with nationwide veterinary teaching programs, the Zoo Miami’s animal hospital will provide students with the opportunity to gain hands-on experience with various internship programs throughout the year.
Stantec’s design takes education into consideration by incorporating wide hallways and large windows with views into treatment rooms, allowing guests to experience the facility. In addition, the animal hospital will offer specialized lab equipment, vast resources and workplaces, and training and education programs for students year-round.
Construction is expected to begin in winter 2025 and is scheduled to be complete in early 2027.
