Stantec to design new academic health sciences and clinical facility for Florida International University and Baptist Health South Florida

Expanding access to healthcare education and services in South Florida

01/27/2025 MIAMI, FL TSX, NYSE:STN

Stantec, a global leader in sustainable design and engineering, was recently selected to design a US$212 million new academic health sciences and clinical facility, a collaboration between Florida International University (FIU), South Florida’s public research university, and Baptist Health South Florida, the area’s largest not-for-profit healthcare system.

Stantec will be providing architecture, medical planning, landscape architecture, sustainability consulting, and other specialty services. The firm previously worked with FIU in a civil and environmental engineering capacity for over a decade. This project marks the first FIU project for Stantec’s architecture and medical planning team.

Finding a solution for physician shortage
The State of Florida is anticipating a shortfall of 18,000 physicians by 2035. The FIU Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine’s alliance with Baptist Health is addressing this physician shortage with plans to create at least 22 graduate medical education programs targeting specialty areas experiencing a supply-and-demand gap. This partnership is a first of its kind for both FIU and Baptist Health.

“There is a great deal of excitement around this collaboration because it elevates the work both FIU and Baptist Health are doing,” said FIU president Kenneth A. Jessell. “We are creating a rich ecosystem that will result in some of the best healthcare in the nation.”

Located on FIU’s Modesto A. Maidique campus, the state-of-the-art facility will serve as a hub for clinical, research, and educational activities. The design will capture the brand aesthetic and embrace the ideals of FIU and Baptist Health to support the cohesive partnership. Stantec’s design team will be fully integrated with specialty experts from the firm’s Miami and Philadelphia offices.

Baptist Health Baptist Hospital is on track to become a statutory teaching hospital with expanded undergraduate and graduate medical education programs, clinical research, and patient care. The new facility will provide direct outpatient clinical health services to the surrounding community.

“Florida’s growing and aging population makes the state susceptible to a physician shortage in primary care. We are proud to be a part of this important collaboration between FIU and Baptist Health as they bring together world-class clinical and academic expertise,” said Arturo Vasquez, AIA, design principal for Stantec. “Our design will support the brand promise of both entities as they share a path to expanded clinical care, improved wellness, and better health.”

Schematic design will kick off in January 2025 with construction completion expected in 2028.
