Stantec completes the reclamation and restoration of Pikeview Quarry in Colorado

The mine closure and remediation project transforms Pikeview Quarry from an industrial quarry into a community asset with a focus on environmental sustainability

Stantec, a global leader in sustainable design and engineering, has recently completed the Pikeview Mine Closure, Reclamation, and Transformation Project for Castle Aggregates in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Stantec’s commitment to the local community drove the Pikeview project to completion, with a focus on sustainability and the restoration of the natural environment. Mine closure and asset transformation are essential aspects of mine planning and are necessary in all efforts to source the critical minerals and metals required for the future.

Pikeview Quarry has been foundational to the Colorado Springs community since it opened in 1903. It was the source of the limestone used to construct much of the city and fuel growth in the local economy. Despite Pikeview’s impact on the community it helped to create, decades of mining activity had left an unattractive and unusable mountainside that was highly visible to residents. Castle Aggregates brought on Stantec to help remediate the land, which not only restored the natural environment but also created a potential recreational space for the community to enjoy.

Stantec has worked with Castle Aggregates as the Prime Consultant to manage the entire reclamation journey. The final reclamation plans were approved in 2020 and included three phases: reclamation, restoration, and recreation. The reclamation phase involved increasing stability to the mountainside to establish a safe and sustainable environment conducive to both human and wildlife activities. The restoration phase enhanced the 130-acre natural landscape through the planting of more than 31,000 native plants and trees, producing a favorable ecosystem for wildlife like bighorn sheep, deer, bear, bobcats, fox, rabbits, and birds. The final phase—recreation—is now being planned, with the opportunity to provide open, natural space for a mountain bike park and recreational community center.

Stantec’s work included permitting, engineering, supply chain support, project management, construction management, and leading the revegetation process. The Stantec team also provided environmental monitoring services and facilitated engagement with stakeholders, which are comprised of the public; the mine owner; the U.S. Forest Service; the City of Colorado Springs; and the Colorado Division of Reclamation, Mining, and Safety.

“Stantec is proud to have supported Castle Aggregates and Colorado Springs on the Pikeview Mine Closure, Reclamation, and Transformation Project,” said Paul Kos, project manager at Stantec. “Our teams view mine closure and asset transformation as critical elements in the mining lifecycle, requiring a strong focus on sustainability and environmental stewardship. Pikeview Quarry has served the City of Colorado Springs for over a century. Now, it has been restored to serve the local community for many, many more years.”

According to Jerald Schnabel, president of Castle Aggregates, “The Pikeview reclamation project in partnership with Stantec showcases our commitment to safety, stability, and aesthetics. Together, we’ve transformed a former limestone mine on the side of a mountain into a stable, beautiful landscape that sets the standard for mining reclamation in Colorado.”

Planning for mine closure is critical to the success and legacy of a mine, and it should be considered before mining operations even begin. Stantec’s Mining, Minerals & Metals team has extensive experience working on mine closure and asset transformation projects. In British Columbia, Stantec’s ecological teams restored caribou habitat at a former mine site. In Ontario, Stantec specialists transformed a former coal site into a solar farm. And in Bristol, United Kingdom, a historic coal site was transformed into new grounds for residential use.

Stantec’s holistic, multidisciplinary, and integrated approach, which considers environmental, regulatory, economic, and social aspects of mine closure projects, is driven by the firm’s commitment to sustainability and enhancing the health of the natural environment.
