Creating capacity for 8000 new passengers daily—an 8km extension on Melbourne’s Mernda rail line with three new stations
Melbourne, Australia’s second-largest city, has a growing population. With an increasing demand for public transport, the Government of Victoria extended the Mernda rail line by eight kilometres and built three new stations in Middle Gorge, Hawkstone, and Mernda—catering for 8000 new passengers a day.
Our transport team provided a range of specialist services including transport modelling, planning, engineering, and design. Our multidisciplinary team contributed to the operation and design of major road intersections, Mernda bus interchange, and a shared path along the rail corridor, increasing accessibility and providing further-reaching travel options to the growing community.
Delivered in a peri-urban environment, on the city periphery, meant our team needed to engage several stakeholders to ensure a smooth delivery while navigating competing priorities—and still delivered six months ahead of schedule.
The Mernda line rail extension and the new stations deliver a more extensive, reliable, and enjoyable transit experience for our North Melbourne commuters.
