Easing traffic congestion with improved transport infrastructure
Since 1961, Duncans Road has served as the route between Werribee and Wyndham Harbour, using a bridge crossing the Melbourne to Geelong freeway. Development along this corridor and rapid growth in local communities meant increasing traffic volumes on the bridge. Motorist frustrations increased too, with no outbound freeway exit and no inbound freeway entrance to and from Geelong. Looking for a solution, the client engaged our services to help clear the congestion with improved infrastructure.
Over four years, we worked with lead contractor WBHO to develop the Duncans Road interchange as part of the Western Road Upgrades Project. Our role? Traffic management design and analysis for the construction phase of the M1/Duncans Road interchange upgrade. This upgrade involved closing down a full freeway, decommissioning the existing bridge, detouring the M1 through Werribee, and creating a new bridge with two lanes in each direction. The project also included an interchange with the freeway that’s set to become a key route for several growing suburbs, connecting to Werribee Town Centre and Wyndham Harbour.
Now fully operational, the Duncans Road interchange has improved traffic flow and is used by more than 11,000 vehicles every day—making it easier for people to get to where they need to be.
