Jess Carey appointed to Floodplain Management Australia’s Executive Committee

Stantec’s Jess Carey brings his expertise to Australia’s national body for floodplain management

06/13/2024 BRISBANE, QLD TSX,NYSE:STN

Floodplain Management Australia (FMA) has appointed Stantec’s Practice Lead—Flood Resilience, Jess Carey to its Executive Committee as Queensland Director. With over 15 years of experience in flood and emergency management planning, he’s ready to put his passion for shaping safer and more resilient communities through flood management at the governance level.

‘I am thrilled to be voted in. Being a born and bred Queenslander has always assisted me in building close working relationships with local flood engineers and disaster management staff and I’ll be looking to further develop those relationships with a particular focus on growing the FMA’s reach, presence and advocacy into Northern and Western Queensland communities,’ says Carey.

Jess provides thought leadership and advocacy on flood risk management issues and climate change flood risk in Queensland, boosting community awareness of flood risk to property and life. Flooding on the east coast of Australia in 2022–2023 prompted Jess to write about the importance of accurate flood classifications in the Australian Journal of Emergency Management, and over the course of his career he’s been active in weather communications, delivering weather impact briefings, interviews and presentations to all levels of government, emergency services, media, and featured in live press conferences.

He has a strong drive to ensure the concepts and benefits of the Australian Institute of Disaster Resilience’s Total Flood Warning System are realised to keep communities safe. Jess also has vast leadership experience in high stress, rapidly changing operational environments. His deep knowledge of flood risk management will contribute to FMA’s role in advocacy, education, policy development, preparing submissions, and supporting flood risk management practitioners and decision makers in preparing for the effects of climate change now and into the future.
